I thought the characters came right out of central casting. Not much nuance or big surprises in character development. The writing seemed a bit dull with hackneyed descriptions. The premise was interesting, and I was looking forward to reading about life in England for the average family during WW2. But the book never felt very real.

This lovely historical novel gives a new look @ the lives of women who kept life going on the British home front during World War II. Interwoven with interesting & innovative recipes, the drama of the individual lives of four women takes shape. Each of them are complex characters who are drawn together by a unique wartime cooking competition. The result is enriching & uplifting.

The four friends have become my friends too. We have so much in common, including a passion for cooking smart!
